Weatherford TX Data Centers and What They Mean for Parker County Acreage
The City of Weatherford said in a May 20, 2026 statement that data centers are not currently an allowed use in any City of Weatherford zoning district, and that a property being discussed near Lake Weatherford is outside city limits. If you are shopping for Parker County acreage around Weatherford, TX, that means the rules that apply to a project next door may come from the county and the state, not the city.
Are data centers allowed in Weatherford, TX?
No, according to the City of Weatherford. The city's May 20, 2026 statement says data centers are not currently an allowed use in any city zoning district. The statement also says the city does not approve zoning, site plans, permits, tax abatements, or land-use decisions for property outside its limits, and that those fall to county and state agencies.
The city says it was not notified of the power generation project tied to the property before it was approved, and that it is monitoring data center activity in the region. For concerns about a project outside city limits, the city points residents to Parker County officials, their state senator and representative, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for air permitting questions. Questions about development inside the city go to Development Services at 817-598-4284.
What has Texas done about data center permits?
Governor Greg Abbott directed TCEQ on Sept. 21, 2026 to halt permits sought by data centers, according to the governor's office. The release says the pause lasts until the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) completes its audit, and it gives no end date. It also says TCEQ must give the Governor's Office an update on its compliance by Oct. 19, 2026.
The Texas Tribune reported the same day that the order also says no other state agency should advance data center-related regulatory approvals until the audit information is collected. The Tribune notes the article does not say whether permits that already exist are affected. Whether this pause touches any specific Parker County project is something I could not confirm.
This is a statewide directive, not a Weatherford rule. It also is not a zoning change. Land outside city limits can still be used under whatever county rules and deed restrictions apply.
What it means for buyers and landowners
If you are buying acreage outside Weatherford: City zoning does not follow you past the city limits. The city says it does not make land-use decisions there, so a neighboring tract may be governed by different agencies than your own. Ask the seller what is known about nearby plans, and look at deed restrictions on the tract and its neighbors.
If you own land near an industrial or power project: The city points residents to Parker County officials, their state legislators, and TCEQ for air permitting questions. Keep copies of any notices you receive.
If you are selling: Be ready to tell buyers what you know about the surrounding area and where you looked for answers.
My take: what I'd do right now
- Find out which jurisdiction you are in. Ask the seller, the title company, or the Parker County Appraisal District whether the tract is inside city limits.
- Ask what is next door. Drive the area, and ask the seller about any permits or notices they have received.
- Read the deed restrictions. They may limit what neighbors can build, and your title company can pull them.
- Check the permit trail. TCEQ handles air permits, and the city says to contact it with questions on those.
- Keep an eye on the state. The pause runs until ERCOT's audit is done, so check back before you close if your timeline is long.
